Principle

For waste waters that are difficult to purify through classical biological or physico-chemical techniques evaporation is sometimes an alternative. This then allows to minimize the current that has to be processed externally. In an evaporator the non-volatile contamination is concentrated in the water to a limited fraction, where pure water and optionally present volatile substances evaporate and form a condensate stream. The condensate stream is usually of relatively good quality and can be either reused in the production process or provided that there's a post-treatment it can be discharged. The concentrate is typically discharged for external treatment.

For water treatment there are two basic types of evaporators used:

  • Vacuum  evaporator
  • Mechanical vapor recompression evaporator

Application

The concentrated salt stream can not usually be discharged and requires external processing. In some cases the high salt content is a cause of corrosion; the implementation of the parts should take this into account. Because of the high investment cost evaporation is only viable to process relatively small amounts.
