  • biological waste water treatment

Description

The institue of psychiatric health care U.P.C. Sint-Kamillus makes part of the association without lucrative purpose ‘Provincialaat der Broeders van Liefde’. On the campus of Bierbeek you can find besides the psychiatric hospital (320 beds and places) a forensic psychiatric nursing home (60 beds) and a polyclinic. In general, about 700 patients and inhabitants (residential and ambulant) are being taken care of. The institute already exists since 1932.

In August 2013, the consulting firm AquaDomo launched a public tender project for the implementation of a new waste water treatment installation. At that time, the septic tank showed signs of defective mineralization and the capacity of the existing biological rotor was getting too small. Some important challenges in the project required a creative approach. Besides the maximal reuse of opportunities from the existing installation and the necessary attention for implementing the installation with regard to the strongly protected landscape, also the restricted disconnection of the storm water had to issued.

As the best available technique for the waste water treatment, a continuous activated sludge installation was proposed. Functional components are a buffer tank, a denitrification and nitrification tank, a secondary clarifier and a sludge containment. The design capacity is 200 m³/day, consisting of 80 m³/day of sanitary waste water and till 120 m³/day for the treatment of storm water. The former septic tank with a volume of 500 m³ is deployed as emergency tank. By this, exceptional storm water peaks till 400 m³/day can always be received and handled.

The denitrification and nitrification tanks and the secondary clarifier were produced in efficient stainless steel units. These tanks are very sustainable and montage was mainly performed in the Trevi workplaces. The service room was built beside the tanks in a 20’ container painted in RAL9006 (SS color), resulting in the look one complete entirety.

To remain below a total height of 2 m (one of the heritage constraints) the foundation plate was installed 1 m below the ground level. To even beter incorporate the plant in the environment shrubs and trees are planted around the installation.

In the meantime the installatie was commisioned, but Trevi continues managing the plant together with U.P.C.. A weekly remote control makes it possible to evaluate good operational conditions. A site visit is performed every two months.
