Van Honsebrouck Belgium is brewing among others Kasteelbier, Brigand, Bacchus and fruit beers St.-Louis. In 2014 the brewery decided to move the entire production from the encircled city centre of Ingelmunster to a large yard of 5 ha yard near Izegem. Nevertheless only  1,5 km ahead from the old plant the relocation was required to comply with the ever growing international market request.
At the new location the produced waste water is no longer discharged in the public sewer, but in the Mandel surface water. A new waste water treatment plant was essential. Future production extensions were taking into account and a waste water flow of 275 m³/day (> 50% higher than the waste water flow immediately after the relocation) was used as design value. The expected waste water characteristics are shown in the table below:

The most appropriate technology appeared to be a continuous biological activated sludge system, without an anaerobic pretreatment. A comprehensive scenario-analyse confirmed the chosen technique for following reasons:

  • The waste water composition is highly changeable (1500 mg COD/L to > 7500 mg COD/L), which is not affordable for a stable anaerobic system.
  • Even with an anaerobic treatment a comprehensive aftertreatment with an aerobic system will be required to achieve the stringent discharge standards. This combined system implicates a high surface use, which is not available, and a higher investment cost.
  • The treatment process remains quite simple without anaerobic digestion, by which operational costs are significant reduced, even without energy recuperation. Thanks to the Trevi low energy consuming aeration system.

The biological waste water treatment plant consists of a pump pit, a drum sieve, a buffer tank, an aeration tank with activated sludge, a clarifier and a sludge mineralization tank. The pump pit is constructed underground (10 m3) with a threefold redundant pumping system, appropriate to handle hot CIP water till 80°C. The buffer capacity is 1000 m3, by which the production stops during the summer shutdown and possible irregular waste water production can be bridged. Total aeration volume of the biological treatment is 2000 m3.
